Caroline Latham, the first lay principal of St. Joseph High School, Downtown Brooklyn, died unexpectedly of a brain aneurysm, Feb. 26.
A resident of Rockville Centre, L.I., Latham was a graduate of The Mary Louis Academy in Jamaica Estates. She earned her bachelor of business administration degree from Baruch College of the City of New York, and her master of science in math leadership from Bank Street College of Education.
In 2016, she was named the first lay principal of St. Joseph H.S.
In the announcement following her appointment, Latham said, “Our competitive society requires students to receive a solid education, but each one also deserves someone who is sensitive to their individual needs.”
She previously served as the mathematics department chairperson at the Convent of the Sacred Heart, Manhattan, and St. Agnes Boys School, Manhattan. She also taught at the Hewitt School, The American School in Japan, The Bank Street College of Education, and Cornell University’s Downstate Campus in New York City.
She is survived by her husband Christopher, her son Eric and stepchildren Elizabeth Ann Poleck, Rita Latham and Christopher Latham.
A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for St. Agnes Cathedral March 1. Burial is to be in St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale.
