My dear brothers and sisters in the Lord,For over 50 years, the Holy See has published a message from the Holy Father for World Communications Day. This year, the theme is “We are members one of another.” (Eph. 4:25) This is a reference to the social network communities to which we belong that should contribute to the whole human community.
The Bay Ridge parish that spawned six other Brooklyn parishes is concluding its 125th birthday celebration. Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio celebrated a Mass of thanksgiving marking the milestone at Our Lady of Angels Church.
Some people wonder why, as Director of the Propagation of the Faith, I would also be interested in promoting Catholic Relief Services (CRS). Some have seen these two arms of the church as competing organizations. I see them as complementary! Both are important missionary organizations.

As director of the Propagation of the Faith, I am meeting missionaries from many faraway places right here in my office. Most of them are priests and some are religious. Today I am writing about a very unusual missionary whom I have met with only a couple of times, but who has been a regular visitor to the Propagation. She is a laywoman who lives in Jackson Heights and has illustrated her love for the poor in the missions for many years.

Those who donate to the Propagation of the Faith may be familiar with the Mass intention forms that accompany the thank you letters sent from our office. Have you ever wondered who says those Masses, or where they are said?
At the beginning of February I began working in the diocesan Chancery building as the new director of the Propagation of the Faith (Missions Office) for our diocese.
IN HIS JUNE 1908 apostolic constitution, “Sapienti Consilio,” Pope Pius X decreed that, as of Nov. 3 that year, the Catholic Church in the United States would no longer be supervised by the Vatican’s missionary agency, the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith (Propaganda Fide). American Catholicism had grown up. The U.S. Church would now be a mission-sending Church, not “mission territory.”
Last Sunday at St. James Cathedral-Basilica in Downtown Brooklyn, the Propagation of the Faith Office conducted its annual World Mission Sunday event as schoolchildren from the diocese were honored for their donations to the missions.
