When Disaster Strikes, Students Unite

As the students and faculty of Bishop Kearney H.S., Bensonhurst, returned to school this week, they shared their stories and experiences and immediately put their heads together to see how they could help the families affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Kearney students rest for a few minutes after sorting and packing up a roomful of the cleaning supplies their classmates had donated during the week. Left to right are Nicole Barone, Stefanie Burgio, Abigail Cheribin, Salma Allam, Cecilia Rodriguez, Kimberly Walsh, Nicole Loretta and Victoria Gonzalez.

The generous and compassionate spirit of the Kearney community was evident all through the building and on the Internet, as administration, faculty, staff, students, alumnae and friends joined together.

All types of supplies for clean-up were collected and sent to the neighborhoods where they were needed.

The student council sponsored a green and gold dress down.  The proceeds will be distributed among their classmates who have had to relocate because of Sandy.

The hugs and smiles that greeted everyone on the first day back will continue for a long time, as those whose lives were not affected by the hurricane express their gratitude for what they have and share with their friends who are not able to return home at this time.

In Queens, at Christ the King R.H.S., Middle Village, students and their families collected food, clothing and blankets for the victims of Hurricane Sandy. Three truckloads of donations were delivered to the Rockaways.

In addition, Christ the King’s Campus Ministry is continuing to collect funds to assist those whose lives have been uprooted from the devastation of the hurricane.
