Tablet TALK: St. Rose Students Honor Pastor

During Catholic Schools Week, St. Rose of Lima Catholic Academy, Rockaway Beach, thanked Msgr. James Spengler for his many years of service as pastor of St. Rose of Lima parish. He was very happy with his new jacket, bearing the academy logo, and a generous donation from the students and their families.

Msgr. Joseph Malagreca, pastor at Holy Cross, Flatbush, will be the speaker at this year’s Tri-Diocesan Charismatic Renewal Leaders Conference, Feb. 28, 9 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. at the Immaculate Conception Pastoral Center, Douglaston.

“We are one body in Christ” is the theme and the Charismatic Renewal is focusing on unity as demonstrated by the Holy Trinity. The conference will feature prayer, praise, song, teaching, faith sharing and Mass.

St. Mary Magdalene Church, Springfield Gardens, invites one and all to attend its annual Black History Mass and Celebration this Sunday, Feb. 15 at 11 a.m.

Calling all artists! The gallery at St. Rose of Lima Church, Parkville, in the Cultural House of St. Joseph, is hosting a Lenten art exhibit under the theme: “Golgotha.”

Artists may submit work using any artistic technique Works to be exhibited behind glass should not exceed 35 x 23.5 inches. The gallery reserves the right to chose artwork based on adherence to theme and originality.

The deadline for submissions is March 6, and the exhibit opening is March 15. A silent auction will be held.
All submissions should be brought to the St. Rose of Lima rectory during normal business hours. The suggested donation for each art work to be exhibited is $5.

Ready for something new from St. Gregory’s Theatre Group (SGTG)? On Saturday Feb. 21, the Bellerose group will host its first Karaoke Fundraiser in the Oak Room.

Event begins at 8 p.m. and is open to ages 16 and older. All are welcome to perform, act as judges or just watch and be entertained. SGTG alumni will perform and there will be prizes, 50/50s and raffles.

Admission is $10, which includes contest participation and a vote for your favorite performer. Refreshments will be available.

For the younger set, ages 10-15, a similar event will be held earlier in the day.

There’s a new film causing quite a stir. Get the Catholic perspective at “50 Shades of Confusion: Sorting Fact and Fiction,” at the next Theology on Tap-NYC, on Monday, Feb. 23.

Speaker Bryan Mercier will talk about the book and the film “50 Shades of Grey,” and address how its content is in complete contrast to the pure life God calls us to lead.

Talk begins at 7:30 p.m. and will be held at Connolly’s Bar, 121 West 45th St. in midtown Manhattan. No RSVP and no admission cost but get there early as seats fill up quickly.

A reminder from Paul Morisi, diocesan coordinator of adolescent and young adult faith formation: A Lenten Evening of Prayer for diocesan Youth Ministers will be held Thursday, March 19 at 7 p.m. at the Bishop Molloy Retreat House, Jamaica Estates. The event is free.
