Sweeney in Royals’ Hall of Fame

Former Kansas City Royals team captain Mike Sweeney, a practicing Roman Catholic ballplayer, was inducted Aug. 15 into the Royals’ Hall of Fame.

The five-time All-Star became the 26th member to receive enshrinement. In 16 professional seasons – 13 with the Royals – Sweeney batted .297 with 215 home runs and 909 RBI.

Following his playing career, he has remained active in the Catholic Church and with numerous charities in the Kansas City, Mo., area.

He was featured along with fellow Catholic baseball players Mike Piazza, Tom Glavine, Craig Biggio, Juan Pierre, David Eckstein, Jeff Suppan, Sean Casey and Mark Teahen in the “Champions of Faith” documentary series.
