Brooklyn-born Auxiliary Bishop Paul Walsh Dead at 77

A funeral Mass was celebrated Oct. 23 at St. Agnes Cathedral, Rockville Centre, L.I., for retired Auxiliary Bishop Paul H. Walsh, who died Oct. 18. He was 77. No cause of death was disclosed.

The bishop had served as an auxiliary bishop from 2003 until his retirement from active ministry in 2012.

Born in Brooklyn, Bishop Walsh was in elementary school when his family moved to Long Island, where he attended St. Barnabas School, Bellmore, and Seton Hall H.S., Patchogue. He then attended Providence College in Rhode Island.

After studying for the priesthood in Massachusetts and Washington, D.C., he was ordained a Dominican priest in 1966.

He was incardinated as a priest of the Diocese of Rockville Centre, L.I., in 1984.
