2015 Auxiliary Bishops

Our Two New Bishops

The diocese rejoiced May 19 with the naming of two new auxiliary bishops for Brooklyn and Queens – Bishops Witold Mroziewski and James Massa.

Bishop Mroziewski, pastor of Holy Cross, Maspeth, and Bishop Massa, moderator of the Curia, were ordained to the episcopacy on Monday, July 20, at St. Joseph’s Co-Cathedral, Prospect Heights, with Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio as the ordaining bishop. Co-consecrators were Auxiliary Bishop Raymond Chappetto, vicar general, and Bishop William Murphy of Rockville Centre. Presiding were Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York, and retired Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, archbishop emeritus of Washington D.C. More than 35 bishops attended, including Archbishop Bernardito Auza, permanent observer of the Holy See to the United Nations; and Brooklyn-born Bishops Gerald Barbarito of Palm Beach, Fla., and Edward Scharfenberger of Albany, N.Y.
