Obituary: Sister Mary Gertrude Meehan

Sister-MeehanCSJSister Mary Gertrude Meehan, C.S.J., a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph, Brentwood, L.I., for 63 years, died April 9.

She entered the congregation from Presentation B.V.M., Jamaica, in 1951. She earned her bachelor’s degree in education from St. John’s University, Jamaica, and a master’s in religious studies from Fordham University, Rose Hill.

Formerly known as Sister Regina Victoria, she taught at St. Francis de Sales, Belle Harbor, 1953-55; Blessed Sacrament, Cypress Hills, 1955-57; St. Robert Bellarmine, Bayside, 1957-60; St. Brendan, Midwood, 1960-61; Academia San Jose, San German, Puerto Rico, 1961-64; St. Teresa of Avila, S. Ozone Park, 1964-66; Most Precious Blood, Long Island City, 1966-67; Holy Family, Flushing, 1967-77; Holy Name of Mary, Valley Stream, L.I., 1977-81, and Bethel House of Prayer, Brentwood, 1981-82.

She served as assistant superior of Maria Regina Residence, Brentwood, 1982-87, and went on to serve at Sacred Heart Academy, Hempstead, 1987-2000; St. Joseph Convent, Brentwood, 2001-2013; and again at Maria Regina Residence, 2013-14.

She was predeceased by her sister, Sister Regina Mundi Meehan.

Interment was in the Sisters’ cemetery in Brentwood.
