Lady Bears Capture HVWAC League Title

The St. Joseph’s College’s Brooklyn Campus, Clinton Hill, women’s basketball team captured its fifth Hudson Valley Women’s Athletic Conference (HVWAC) championship with a 57-43 victory Feb. 17 over top-seeded Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Albany, N.Y.

Junior Kelly McNamee scored a team-high 15 points – 13 of which came in the second half – on 7-of-12 shooting. For her efforts, she was named Tournament M.V.P.

Former Bishop Kearney H.S., Bensonhurst, stars and current sophomores for the Lady Bears, Samantha Retas and Taylor Raccuglia, each added 12 points. Retas also secured seven caroms and blocked a game-high five shots while Raccuglia dished out a game-high five assists.

The Lady Bears used a 17-8 run in the second half to establish the lead after trailing for most of the first half.

This is St. Joseph’s first HVWAC league title since 2010.
