  1. Hello,

I am four years too late reading this fine article, Diocese Honors Sister-Jubilarians 2014. Nonetheless, I was THRILLED to see one of my teachers from the mid-1960’s being honored by Bishop DiMarzio. My parish in those days was Sacred Heart on Clermont Avenue in Fort Greene. I attended school there from 1965 through 1969. Sacred Heart was also where I made my First Holy Communion and served as an Altar Boy. Sister Mary O’Connor (pictured next to the Bishop to his left side) was one of my teachers. In those days, her religious name was Sister Mary Loretto and she wore the customary black habit of the Religious Sisters of Mercy. That habit was “modified” in 1968, which shortened its length, not too much, but slightly below the knees. Their long veil was curtailed as well while exposing neatly combed bangs of hair on their forehead. I was truly touched just seeing her photo. Her face still looks the same. She was a wonderful Sister and teacher, I never forgot her. The Good Lord has blessed her with continued devotion to Him, His people, and fidelity to her vows. Thank you Tablet for covering this event. THANK YOU, Sister Mary O’Connor, for being a part of my fondest memories to this day. Rafael Ocasio 11/15/2018
